Since the last couple of Blog posts, we've encountered a rather large
hiccup. It's a little bit complicated, marrying a citizen of the USA in
the UK when you are a British citizen. There's the small matter of
applying for a Visitor for Marriage visa, without which the registrar
will not conduct the ceremony.
The application form is lengthy,
the questions intrusive and the accompanying paperwork mindboggling. The
fiancé was so stressed by the whole thing he developed stress angina. I
don't mind my Government being incredibly nosey if we intended to
settle in the UK; we don't. We just wanted to visit for a few days to
get married with our family and friends.
However, we could get
married in Denmark without going through any of this rigmarole, so we've
pretty much decided to do just that. We'll have a renewal of vows
ceremony (need to arrange a location and find a celebrant for that, we
don't do church ceremonies.) So we will still have a 'wedding' and a
party afterwards, but we will already be married.
As he has Thanksgiving (November 25th) off work, we will probably marry around that date.
Yesterday
we went looking at wedding rings. He'd said that, while he wasn't keen
on spending thousands on an engagement ring, he would buy me a gorgeous
wedding ring. When we got to the store, though, we realised we could buy
a really lovely Princess-cut solitaire engagement ring and a
diamond-set wedding band for the same price as a really nice wedding
ring. So that's what we've ordered! We had to do that online as
unfortunately they only carry a US size 7 in store, and my fingers are
bigger. Hopefully we'll have the rings before the wedding!
